Want to make the world a better place?
Are you looking for ways to support non-profits? I’ve created a list of non-profits I’ve worked closely with as a social work student in the Dayton, OH area.
Some of these are my hometown heroes, others are global superstars.
Sunshine Communities Inc.
Maumee, OH
Sunshine Communities, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Northwest Ohio that supports and empowers people of all ages with developmental disabilities to build meaningful lives, form lasting relationships, and thrive in their communities. They have a state-of-the-art ventilator program, as well as work programs for individuals of all ability types.
SPECIAL NOTE: As a former employee of Sunshine, I can assure you that your donation will transform the lives of the individuals there. It is one of my favorite places in the whole wide world. The staff truly loves the individuals here. Not only do they support adults, but they also have residential and daytime programs for kids. I miss my babies every time I go to school! You can see one of my kids on the front page of the website 🙂
Bella Vita Network
Toledo, OH.
Bella Vita Network is a Christ-centered organization, transforming the pro-life movement by collaborating with like-minded organizations to boldly provide sustainable solutions that empower and equip individuals and organizations to make abortion unthinkable in our community and country. Bella Vita runs a pregnancy center, support homes for single moms, and support groups for women and men for post-abortion care.
Samaritan’s Purse International Relief
Global organization
Samaritan’s Purse doesn’t just do thrift shops; it has relief networks within the United States and internationally. Since 1970, Samaritan’s Purse has helped meet the needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine with the purpose of sharing God’s love through His Son, Jesus Christ.
SPECIAL NOTE: I will be going on a relief mission with Samaritan’s Purse in March 2026. Stay tuned for updates!
Building Bridges
Dayton, OH
The program’s main objective is to help at-risk youth in Montgomery County turn their lives around, develop self-esteem, and remain out of the juvenile justice system. Every day, through caring mentorship, hands-on experiences, and personalized life-skills coaching, their dedicated staff reminds me that every individual deserves a chance to flourish—especially those touched by the juvenile justice system. They believe in the potential of every young person and work passionately to open doors to brighter futures.
SPECIAL NOTE: One of my former professors worked with Building Bridges. These children are increasingly vulnerable to homelessness, substance abuse, and returning/entering the criminal justice system. Even if you don’t support this group, I would suggest donating to mentorship-style organizations. They do incredible work at supporting kids and young adults to create for themselves a better tomorrow.
